SERVICES

For new clients, if required, I am happy to proofread or edit a sample of your work with no charge before we begin the collaborative work.  This will be an opportunity to show you my editing style and you will be able to decide if you are happy with this, and at the same time I will be able to assess and estimate a timescale to produce a completed job.

AS STANDARD, I WILL ADHERE TO THE NEW HART'S RULES AND THE NEW OXFORD DICTIONARY FOR WRITERS & EDITORS, AS WELL AS ANY STYLE SHEETS YOU MAY WISH TO SUPPLY.

Using the Track Changes feature in MS Word or the Comments and Correction Tools within Adobe, we can work together to create a finished manuscript that tells your story as perfectly as you dreamed it.

Proofreading

It is a truth universally acknowledged, that the mind's eye sees what it wants to see when it comes to reviewing our own work, and the proofreading stage is an essential part of publishing works of fiction. I mean, is there anything worse than finding a typo in a book you were just beginning to fall in love with? (Well there are worse things, but, you know...)

If you are happy with your completed manuscript I can give your work a final polish to eliminate any errors and ensure formatting is consistent. I have exceptional attention to detail and I will clean up errors in spelling and punctuation, mistyped words, inaccuracies, and inconsistencies. Basically, I will catch anything that slipped through the net on earlier rounds of editing, and you can be sure your manuscript for submission will be word-perfect.

Copy Editing

An enticing 'to be read' pile of novels.

Copy editing is a process in which I will really put myself in your shoes as an author, to maintain your style, tone and voice and always with the aim of improved structure and flow.

Copy editing can involve some basic rewriting or highlighting of areas of text that an author may need to look at again.  When copy editing your manuscript, I will be working at sentence level, looking for opportunities for the text to be improved with smooth dialogue, consistency within the narrative, and character authentication.

Rest assured, every suggestion I make will be supplied sensitively and respectfully, and with the aim of a finished manuscript that is your very best work, ready to delight your readers.

Upon completing your early drafts, you may wish to submit your manuscript for structural editing.  This stage of the process addresses the 'big picture', and those all important elements that make up the foundations of the story.

I can give feedback and constructive comments about the following elements:

  • Plot: the series of events that make up the story

  • Structure: the story's overall layout

  • Character arc: throughout the story, the protagonist    should embark on and complete an internal journey

  • The point of view: from which the story is told

  • Themes and settings: prevalent throughout the story.

  • Pace: the speed at which events unfold.

Note: It would be an inefficient use of time to copy edit or proofread the manuscript at this point within the writing and editing process.  Those procedures are applied at the fine-tuning stage.
